Hey all! I decided to talk to you guys about something. And don't think this is pointed to only boys because I said "guys." I call everybody that, lol.
Anyways, what I wanted to talk to you about is something that happens on dA a lot: Stolen artwork. There are different factors that go into why somebody steals another's art, but I'm here to talk about a particular scenario; the situation I call, The Extremely Insecure Artist.
This is something I've seen many times. The Insecure Artist joins dA only to find that day after day of posting pictures they've drawn that no one (or maybe one or two) comments on them. This for most people can make the artist feel even worse about themselves when the goal was to feel better about themselves.
So, after browsing through the dA search engine, they find a picture in the same area that they had been drawing. This picture is different though. What makes it so is that it has an abundance of comments and favs. So, it makes the artist think...Maybe if I draw something like THAT, then people will start commenting on my stuff! Then, they draw something that is almost exactly the same. They don't get any activity for a while until that one person comes along and sees that the OC is the same as one of their friends on dA and tell that friend.
This makes the situation worse in some ways because they tell the Insecure Artist to take down the picture or to at least say that the OC isn't theirs. Devastated, the Artist continues to try to find more ways to get more comments. Making another version of someone else's picture didn't work so well, so the only "logical" next step is to take a picture completely and claim it as their own.
Soon enough, they get what they wanted: More activity on their page, more comments, favs, and even some watchers! ...until someone recognizes the picture and tells everyone who commented such nice things about the picture that the Artist stole it. Everyone goes nuts. They call the Artist a "b**ch" or tell them to "F*** off the other artists' pictures. They all completely switch from loving the Insecure Artist to hating her.
The Insecure Artist's world comes crashing down. They can't do anything to please people. When they did the work themselves no one liked it, when they stole, everyone hated them. They then try over and over stealing more art and they become known for that. People curse at them when what they want is some love and attention. Instead, they're getting what they get in the real world online, too.
Why I'm saying this is...there are many ways that this can be prevented. I'm not saying to comment on every single piece of art that isn't extremely good, but every once in a while just encourage a fellow artist. Also, if you yourself run into an Insecure Artist, there are a LOT of nicer things you can say than those things I typed. I'm serious. How you phrase things changes everything for them. Just say you want to see THEIR drawings and not someone else's on their page instead of cursing them off. That just makes it worse for them and their emotions will only escalate.
I know that not many of you will read this, but to those of you who are, thank you! And please take my advice about this. Help the weak instead of making them weaker...
